CAROLYN Brown

Teaching has always been the largest part of my life. Beginning as a high school student while enrolled in ROP (Early Childhood Studies), on through teaching in private and charter schools, and finally landing with my ultimate goal achieved; a teaching credential in visual art.

I have spent years balancing my day jobs with personal creative work. Without having a single set “classroom location” of my own, I spent most of time in my personal studio creating lessons and activities for students, then, traveled all over Southern California teaching them. While I believe these years are what made me the versatile and hard-working teacher I am today, I have always longed for a more stable community of educators.

In a nutshell… My creative approach—no matter the medium—is to find points of meaning and emotion behind any idea.

My teaching approach—much like my creative approach—is to find creativity and success behind any student.

Being a “creative” and a “teacher” work together like, peanut butter & jelly, milk & cookies, or peas & carrots (scratch that one; I don’t like peas). Good teaching takes creativity… and growing creatively means… being taught. I continue to take new or advanced art classes to become a better artist but I also continue to take classes to receive my Master’s Degree in Education to become a better teacher. And then somewhere in the middle (or what I like to call the “sweet-spot”), I am continuously learning from, teaching to, or collaborating with, my students and colleagues.
